The answer will depend on your personality and how you want  your photos to come out. If you want a professional look into your photos, buying a dslr with good lens is a good option. If  you are more into taking personal snapshots, a handy point and shoot camera would suffice. I think flip cameras are good especially if you are into taking self-shots.
