Are you looking for an escape to the time of magic and imagination? Or are you up for a tear-jerking heavy dose of teenage coming of age story and a romantic New York love affair?
Witness an action-packed trip through the deserts of Persia, a heartwarming cougar-style love affair in New York, a teenage story of two star-crossed lovers, and a journey through imagination with awesome visual effects and choreography.
This April, you don’t have to choose as Star Movies lets your mind travel the depths of fantasy and reality.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (April 3). Go on a journey with Jake Gyllenhaal in this epic adventure in the heart of Persia. After he was falsely accused of killing his adoptive father, Prince Dastan (Gyllenhaal) tries to avenge his death by discovering the identity of the true killer. Along the way, he joins forces with the mysterious Princess Tamina (Gemma Artenton) as they go against the dark forces and guard an ancient dagger, which holds the famed Sands of Time.
Remember Me (April 10). Robert Pattinson switches from brooding vampire to rebellious NYU student Tyler Hawkins in Remember Me. After his brother’s suicide and his parents’ divorce, Tyler becomes isolated and troubled. He meets fellow NYU student Ally (Emilie De Ravin), and find strength and inspiration in each other. As Tyler and Ally strive to overcome their own tragedies, love seems like a possibility on the horizon, until their secrets start to unravel and threaten to tear them apart.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (April 17). Experience a fantastic visual ride into the world of imagination and stories of Doctor Parnassus. Played by Christopher Plummer, Parnassus leads a traveling troupe, which includes Anton (Andrew Garfield), Percy (Verne Troyer), and his daughter Valentina (Lily Cole). Because of a deal with Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), Parnassus is on a race against time to save Valentina from becoming another soul sacrifice. Then Tony (played by Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law), an unpredictable comical man with amnesia, enters the picture, and he might be Valentina’s only hope.
The Men Who Stare at the Goats (April 24). George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey star in a comedy war film that is loosely based on Jon Ronson’s book of the same name. Reporter Bob Wilton (McGregor) lands himself a story of a lifetime where he meets former U.S. Army member Lyn Cassady (Clooney). Together, they try to uncover the secret of a unit that employs paranormal powers and goats in their missions.
Personal:
Working in a foreign territory is quite a challenge for me. I especially find it hard to converse with the locals since most of them are not fluent in speaking English. As a sales executive, a huge chunk of my role involves actively seeking sales leads. Good thing Google is very helpful in providing me a list of various companies (Retail, Manufacturing, Industrial Bearings, Transportation, Freight, etc) which I could tap for our products and services. I’m crossing my fingers for a call-back and confirmed appointments!
Personal:
I’ve been here in SG for two months and the one thing I really hate most here is the beer prices. :( I can’t drink as much as I used to in MNL. It would be really nice though if I could find a nice bar/pub at East Coast that has a Mogwai or Big Sky Mind feel into it: the couch, vintage lighting, artsy interiors, and most importantly, PHP50 bottle of ice cold San Mig Pilsen.
PERSONAL:
So I learned that here in Singapore, if a person wants to own a car, he/she would shell out at least SGD70,000 to get the necessary permits to drive a car. It is ridiculous, really. But for a country that is so small (and without natural resources), it is quite a smart move to limit access to private vehicles. Less traffic, less pollution, and less road accidents. Good thing to know that the major banks here offer affordable, if not cheap auto insurance policies.
PERSONAL:
When I graduated in 2007, I immediately uploaded my resume in Jobstreet and Jobsdb—the biggest names in online job searches. Some people tend to ask, which is better: jobsdb or jobstreet? Personally, I like JobsDB more because the interface is much easier to use. I don’t need to open new windows or tabs to view the job description, as compared to Jobstreet. The job categories are also better. Industries include Advertising, Technical, Medical, Buyer Jobs, and a whole lot more. Still, at the end of the day…your job hunting would depend on your persevarance, patience, and qualifications. Good luck! :)
PERSONAL:
Almost everyone dreams of having an investment or business of their own. I think with the economy nowadays, people find it relevant to come up with a more lucrative source of income rather than relying on a 9-hour job. Some people build their dream businesses, others go into stock trading, gold investing, pyramid marketing, and others. Personally, I would like to have my own backpacker’s inn cum music cafe. I think it would be a great choice for me as I love to travel, drink, and listen to music :)
PERSONAL:
Ever since I moved here in Singapore, I always find fascination in buying things that I need for my “home.” I currently live in a simple HDB with 9 other Filipinos, sharing a room with 2 others. I have no problems with adjusting because growing up, I share rooms with my 2 sisters and I always do the chores. =p However, since I’m living independently now, I must buy ALL the things I need for my room. So when I heard of Carrefour’s Mega Sale today at Expo Hall, I immediately thought of buying new things for myself such as electronic weighing scale, maybe a heated blanket, and a bunch of groceries. The sale begins today, March 24 and will go until March 27. See you there! :)
ON A PERSONAL NOTE:
Several weeks ago, I saw a facebook advertisement about free Svenson treatments. Out of curiosity, I clicked the link which redirected me to a fan page. For those who don’t know, Svenson is a global brand that offers hair loss products and treatments. I don’t have any hair loss problems but I signed up for their FREE treatment promo. Now, I’ve been receiving various calls from them asking me to come down for my “treatment.” Yes, it has become annoying. No, I don’t want to go down to Svenson. Sorry :(
In the aftermath of Japan’s tragic incidents, the Japanese government has doubled the number of soldiers being deployed for rescue and recovery operations.
In a report by BBC, about 100,000 soldiers have now been committed to the operations.
“There are so many people who are still isolated and waiting for assistance. This reality is very stark,” Defence Minister Toshimi Kitazawa said.
Working double–triple even–to make sure that as much citizens will be rescued, these Japanese soldiers must be awarded not only with challenge coins but with respect.
As I’m currently based in Singapore, I would like to share some tips for those people who are looking for a career in this fine city.
1. Be Patient. Don’t get too agitated if employers don’t respond to your application right away.
2. Read the papers and browse online for a job opening that fits your qualifications. Various opportunities are available in different industries that range from entry level to management jobs
3. Pray. No explanation needed.
